What an AI Answering Service Actually Costs (With Our Real Prices)

August 31, 20264 min read

Nobody in this industry publishes numbers. Here are ours — setup, monthly, and the usage costs most vendors don't mention until the contract.

Try to find a price on most AI companies' websites. You'll get "Book a demo," a sales call, and a quote that mysteriously matches whatever budget you mentioned on the call.

We think that's backwards — owners in the trades publish their service call fee on the truck. So here's what this actually costs, including the parts vendors usually save for the fine print.

Our real numbers

Chat-based AI systems start at $1,997 one-time setup plus $197/month for our Essential package — instant lead response, appointment booking, basic follow-up. Professional runs $3,997 plus $397/month and adds advanced qualification, long-term nurturing, sales features, analytics, and unlimited integrations; it's what most clients choose.

Voice systems — the AI that answers your actual phone — start at $2,997 plus $397/month, with Professional at $5,997 plus $697/month. Fully custom builds for complex needs (multi-location, HIPAA, specialized workflows) start around $8,000.

Everything is done-for-you: strategy, build, integrations, testing, training. Live in about 5–7 days. Current details always live at autometrx.ai/pricing — if anything there differs from this article, the pricing page wins.

The cost vendors don't mention: usage

Here's the fine print we'd rather put in the headline. AI systems run on AI models, and the model usage is billed by the AI provider based on your conversation volume — you hold that account, so you see the real bill instead of a marked-up mystery.

The usage bill scales with your conversation volume — for most shops it's a modest monthly amount that grows only as the system handles more calls and chats, and message delivery adds pennies per text. Real money, worth budgeting — and because you hold the account, you see the provider's actual bill instead of a marked-up mystery. Current typical ranges are listed in the FAQ at autometrx.ai.

If a vendor quotes you a price and never mentions usage costs, ask. Either they're absorbing it with a markup, or you'll meet it on your first invoice.

How to think about whether that's expensive

A number without a comparison is noise. Three ways to anchor it:

Against staff: covering nights and weekends with humans means salary, and even great office staff can only take one call at a time. The AI's annual cost — setup, monthly, and usage — is a fraction of a full-time hire, and it answers every line at once, at 2 AM, without turnover.

Against a traditional answering service: per-minute billing climbs exactly when a heat wave spikes your call volume, and what you buy is messages. Flat AI pricing doesn't move during your busiest week, and what you buy is booked appointments.

Against doing nothing: this is the real comparison. One recovered job at a $2,500 average ticket covers months of the system. The free ROI calculator puts your own missed-call number next to these prices; for most shops the monthly leak is several times the monthly cost.

The metric that settles it: cost per booked appointment

Don't evaluate any option — ours included — on the sticker. Divide total monthly cost by appointments actually booked. A cheap chatbot that books nothing is infinitely expensive. An answering service that takes forty messages a month may cost more per booked job than a system that costs twice as much and books thirty of them.

That framing also tells you when not to buy: if your phones are answered live at a high rate, your after-hours volume is tiny, and your leads are mostly referrals who'll wait — the math may not clear yet, and we'd rather tell you that on a call than have you find out on an invoice.

Kick the tires before spending anything

The demo costs nothing and answers the "is the conversation actually good?" question in ten minutes: autometrx.aidemo.app. And if you want to start small, our Essential tier exists precisely so owners can test AI on real calls before committing to the full system — about a third of our clients start there and upgrade within a few months, with half the Essential setup fee credited toward the move.

Published prices, disclosed usage costs, and a metric to judge us by. That's the standard we'd want as buyers — hold every vendor you talk to, including us, to it.

Autometrx AI builds done-for-you AI voice and chat agents for home service businesses — HVAC, plumbing, roofing, landscaping and fencing — live in 5 days, booking appointments 24/7. Full current pricing at autometrx.ai/pricing, the ROI calculator, and the live demo.
